Rafters, Part One

The last two days have been spent on setting rafters.

I am thrilled with the way the roof is turning out.

The cottage now has a completely different appearance, both inside and outside.

16 of 28 rafters have been set. It will take two or three more days to finish installation.

I'm finding that working with rafters is enormously satisfying.

The space inside the building is starting to feel like home.

Roof Beams

It took the better part of a week but all three beams for the roof have been installed.

The wide overhangs will help to keep the cob as dry as possible.

Work will now begin on installing the rafters.

That's High Enough

The gable ends have been completed. These walls will go no higher.

The beams for the roof will be installed next.

I am very happy to have reached this milestone.

You can almost visualize the roof on it.

Even more spectacular than a sunset is ... a moonset!

Gable Ends

Work this week has been focused on the north and south gable ends.

With the increasing height of the ends the complexion of the house has changed.

Just one more foot of height to go and then the ridge beam will be set.

The loft window has been installed and a hole has been left in the wall for the stove pipe.

The loft will have some niches in the walls.

Glass block has been installed in the south end.

So tall!

I can't wait for the roof to be installed. It won't be long now.

A Look Back

Since the walls are nearly complete I thought it would be fun to take a look back at the various stages of construction the cottage has been at.

Statistics as of today: 71 days of wall building (some days were partial days). 462 batches of cob. Crew size 1.

The loft now has a window frame.

Some glass block has been added to the south wall.
